In a recent chat, Rep. Tim Burchett from Tennessee shared his thoughts on using straws, responding to a query from Fox News producer Johnny Verisario. Burchett made it clear he doesn’t use them, jokingly noting, “That’s what the women in my house do.”
Verisario had been asking Republican lawmakers about “men’s rules” set by Fox host Jesse Watters, who supposedly suggests that men shouldn’t drink from straws in public.
Burchett’s light-hearted response seemed to underscore a playful take on traditional views. However, it’s interesting to see how these conversations unfold, especially in the larger context of plastic usage. Back in February, former President Trump made headlines by signing an executive order to revert to plastic straws, claiming paper straws just “don’t work.”
This move was in stark contrast to initiatives promoted by the Biden administration, which aims to eliminate single-use plastic purchases by 2035. In a statement from July, the White House highlighted concerns about plastic production and waste doubling in the last two decades, harming oceans and public health.
