House Republican who impeached Trump survives challenge from the right in Washington

According to the decision, Rep. Dan Newhouse (Wash.), one of the original 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach then-President Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, Headquarters desk expected to survive challenges from Trump-supporting candidates.

Mr. Newhouse won reelection on behalf of four parties in Washington.thThe congressional district is located in the center of the state and was won by Trump in 2020 by a 17-point margin. He ran against former NASCAR driver Jerrod Sessler, who also received support from the House Freedom Caucus and former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Washington has an open primary system, where all candidates running for the same office, regardless of party affiliation, are placed on one ballot. The top two finishers advance to the November general election.

Sessler ran against Newhouse in the 2022 primary, but finished in fourth place.

Mr. Trump entered the primary this cycle to support Mr. Sessler and later another Republican candidate, Tiffany Smiley, as part of a revenge tour to purge Republicans who opposed him. Newhouse won re-election for the first time since his impeachment vote in 2022, easily winning 68% of the vote, but this time Trump tried to take aim at the defector.

Newhouse is only one of two remaining House Republicans who supported impeachment. The other is Congressman David Valadao (California).
