House Republicans advocate for recognizing Charlie Kirk with new US currency

Proposal to Honor Charlie Kirk with Commemorative Coins

In a recent development, two House Republicans are advocating for a new initiative to honor Charlie Kirk, who was tragically assassinated earlier this month. Rep. August Pfluger from Texas and Rep. Abe Hamadeh from Arizona plan to introduce a bill that would instruct the U.S. Treasury to mint 400,000 silver dollar coins featuring Kirk’s likeness.

This move is part of a broader effort by Republican lawmakers to commemorate conservative figures after violent incidents. The proposed coin, labeled fiat currency, would display Kirk’s image on one side and the inscription “well done, good and faithful servant” on the reverse.

Interestingly, the coin will also bear Kirk’s full name, “Charles James Kirk,” along with the U.S. motto. The design will ultimately be decided by the Treasury Secretary in collaboration with the sitting president, who currently is Donald Trump.

Rep. Hamadeh spoke to the significance of this honor, describing Kirk as an “American treasure.” He emphasized Kirk’s commitment to the country, stating that he devoted significant time, energy, and resources to make America a better place for future generations, ultimately paying the highest price for his beliefs. Hamadeh believes that this coin would serve as a powerful reminder of Kirk’s legacy.

Pfluger remarked that with this legislative push, Kirk, at just 31 years old, would be featured on what could be one of the youngest U.S. currency representations. He referred to Kirk as a “conservative titan” whose influence on many Americans merits recognition alongside prominent leaders in the nation’s history.

However, a law passed in 1866 prohibits the depiction of living individuals on U.S. currency; this has fostered a debate about the appropriateness of this proposed honor. While figures like Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Hamilton have graced various currency forms, the initiative presents a unique challenge in this regard.

This proposal comes on the heels of a bipartisan resolution that the House approved last week to honor Kirk and condemn political violence. In addition to the coin initiative by Pfluger and Hamadeh, there are ongoing discussions among GOP lawmakers about potentially awarding Kirk Congressional Medals, as well as calls for a statue of him in the U.S. Capitol following his assassination.
