First appearance on Fox: Rep. Byron Donald, a Florida Republican, is leading an overhaul of Washington, D.C.’s criminal policy in an effort to crack down on the alarming rise in juvenile crimes in the city.

His new bill, the DC Criminal Reform to Make Everyone Safe Immediately (DC CRIMES) Act, would impose specific changes targeted at how juveniles and young adults are prosecuted.

If passed, this bill would lower the age to be classified as a “youth” from under 25 to under 18. This classification gives D.C. courts more flexibility in sentencing for crimes committed.

It would also prevent courts from sentencing juvenile offenders based on minimum statutory requirements and prevent D.C.’s progressive City Council from changing those requirements.

The bill also requires the D.C. Attorney General to provide the public with information about juvenile and juvenile crime rates by creating a public website where statistics are readily available.

A year-to-date crime comparison provided by the Metropolitan Police Department shows the number of murders in the capital increased by 35% from 2022 to 2023, while the overall violent crime rate rose by 39%. Robberies increased by 67% and auto thefts increased by 82%.
