Subpoenas Issued by House Oversight Committee on Epstein Files
The House Oversight Committee recently issued a series of significant subpoenas while Republicans advocate for greater transparency regarding the Epstein Files.
Chairman James Comer from Kentucky announced that the committee is summoning former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, and former FBI Directors James Comey and Robert Mueller, along with four additional former Justice Department officials. The depositions are expected to occur between late August and October.
The committee has also called upon Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate, who has been implicated in conspiracy and sexual abuse involving minors.
This action follows the fallout from a recently leaked DOJ memo regarding Epstein’s death, which described it as a suicide and claimed there was no client list, igniting frustration among lawmakers from both parties.
In the months since that leak, there has been considerable pressure on lawmakers to manage the ensuing backlash.
The Trump administration has remained steadfast amid the negative response to these revelations. President Donald Trump has continually asserted his support for Attorney General Pam Bondy and the FBI leadership, labeling the Epstein Files as “fabricated” by Democrats. He stated, “I think these files were made up by the Obama administration and by Biden.”
Despite the controversy, Comer insists that these subpoenas are “essential” for Congress in investigating the Epstein scandal and those associated with it.
He emphasized that it’s critical to oversee the investigation and prosecution of both Epstein and Maxwell, particularly regarding federal enforcement of sex trafficking laws.
