Mr Johnson plans to take his nomination to the full House of Commons on January 3, but will need a majority in the chamber to continue leading the House.

Mr. Johnson had been trying to hold on to the gavel after winning the top job in a whirlwind process last year following the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

Just before Wednesday's vote, he secured an endorsement from President-elect Trump, a boon to his candidacy and future path to the gavel. In a meeting with House Republicans on Wednesday morning, Trump called Johnson a “good person” and “I'm with him all the way,” a person present told The Hill.

Mr Johnson said on Tuesday he was confident he would have near-unanimous support from his party to secure the Speaker's seat.

Conservatives such as the House Freedom Caucus have cited Johnson's support for aid to Ukraine, opposition to FISA Section 702 privacy reform, and support for the bill with Democratic support. They criticize the forced adoption.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who along with Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) led the effort to oust Mr. Johnson in the past Congressional term, said that Mr. He has not ruled out voting for chairman.

“I think whoever is in charge here in the House, their job is to pass President Trump’s agenda,” she said.

Rep. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.), who also criticized the chairman, said, “Ultimately, I hope the president will lead the team he wants on the ground.''
