GOP Investigators Continue to Scrutinize ActBlue
House Republicans are indicating that their inquiry into ActBlue is not finished, especially after a disturbing report raised suspicions about whether this Democratic fundraising powerhouse is taking foreign donations and misrepresenting facts to Congress.
“We’ve seen issues like fraudsters siphoning taxpayer money and the acceptance of illegal foreign funds through ActBlue. It’s pretty clear that, I think, the Democrats have been involved in some dubious practices. Our investigation is ongoing, and we’re expecting to receive more documents and testimonies in the near future,” said House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky.
ActBlue functions as a substantial fundraising platform for various campaigns, including those of figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed.
Republican lawmakers have long alleged that the platform has inadequate verification methods for donors, a point that ActBlue claims it has been addressing since the GOP started its investigation. However, recent findings suggest that employees may have been approving donations even when their origins raised concerns.
Continued Usage of ActBlue by Politicians Amid Controversy
Despite the controversies surrounding it, the company insists that it has acted correctly and seems unwilling to return any donations mentioned in the report.
Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., remarked that ActBlue’s own statements bring up serious doubts about its fraud prevention methods, including their so-called passport verification system, which he argued does not properly validate entries against any government database. “We are committed to uncovering the truth about what’s going on at ActBlue,” he stated.
A representative for Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, confirmed that the House Judiciary Committee will maintain its rigorous examination of ActBlue, including additional depositions.
It’s unclear how fruitful these depositions will be, given that a recent set of transcripts revealed all ten employees and board members from ActBlue who participated invoked their Fifth Amendment rights to avoid answering questions.
This includes co-founder Matt DeBergalis, who also opted for silence, and ActBlue CEO Regina Wallace-Jones, who recently pleaded the Fifth during public testimony.
The GOP report included a letter from Wallace-Jones maintaining that donations from individuals with foreign addresses required a passport number for verification. However, the Republicans countered that the verification process is virtually meaningless, as it only checks for a specific number of characters rather than confirming if a passport is legitimate.
Scrutiny Intensifies
Besides raising questions about verification, the report cited instances where ActBlue supervisors approved donations despite explicit warnings, including notes about donors having IPs indicating connections to places like Hong Kong. Another message highlighted the decision to deny a contribution, stating it “should have been accepted,” underscoring the complications of foreign donations.
In response to ongoing criticisms, ActBlue maintains that it is the target of politically motivated attacks and has suggested that there is no substantial evidence of foreign donations impacting U.S. elections.
The recent report has sparked significant backlash, prompting Republican campaign officials to demand that House Democrats return all donations made through ActBlue, asserting that the platform is facing serious allegations and that ignorance cannot be claimed while benefiting from it.
When asked about returning donations, ActBlue referenced its previous statements on the GOP report, emphasizing that they believe the claims made against them are unfounded and politically driven. They argue, “This isn’t about the facts; it’s a coordinated effort to undermine organizations that challenge the Republican agenda.”
