House Republicans Set Long-Awaited Mayorkas Impeachment Hearing

The House Homeland Security Committee will begin impeachment proceedings against embattled Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on January 10th.

The first hearing will be held the day after the House returns from Christmas break.

“Our investigation shows that at the root of this crisis are Secretary Mayorkas' decision-making and refusal to implement laws passed by Congress, and his failure to take the oath of office,” said Mark Green, chairman of the committee. It has become clear that responsibility is required.” punch bowl news. “The House's bipartisan vote in November to refer articles of impeachment to my committee only underscores the importance of us working on the impeachment process, which we will begin next Wednesday. It’s what you do.”

Mayorkas is a top target for Republicans at the border in unprecedented numbers. In December, when immigration is generally low, the number of encounters with migrants reached a record high of 302,000. But Republicans have accused their own leadership of slow progress in impeaching Mayorkas.

In November, the House set aside Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-Ga.) resolution to impeach the embattled chief by referring it to a committee by a vote of 209-201. Frustrated after two voters were killed in a head-on collision with a car driven by a smuggler fleeing police in Texas, a disgruntled Greene forced a vote on the privilege resolution.

Border security is certain to be a top priority on Capitol Hill in 2024. Greene's announcement was made Wednesday as about 60 Republicans gathered at the southern border, hosted by border state Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-Texas).

In the Senate, Senate negotiators are working toward a compromise that would combine tens of billions of dollars in foreign aid and border security measures. Negotiators say that given the political reality that House Republicans continue to insist that they seek House-passed HR2, perhaps the most significant border security measure passed by Congress in decades, as the standard for compromise. We are working on this.

House Republicans' insistence on pairing aid to Ukraine and Israel with truly substantive border security policy has emboldened Senate Republican foreign policy hawks, many of whom have previously paid lip service to the need for border security. people) have begun to demand meaningful changes in policy. border policy. These dynamics have emboldened border hawks. They rightly believe that the internationalist wing of the party's fervent desire to continue funding the war in Ukraine is the best tool in recent years for achieving meaningful policy reform.

But absent any progress in negotiations, which is not expected anytime soon, if at all, the committee kickoff of the Mayorkas impeachment process will be the first significant action on the subject in the new year.

The committee could hold additional hearings next week. But the House will likely want to act quickly, as Republican leaders also plan to hold hearings to impeach President Biden, with the goal of holding a vote as early as February.

Meanwhile, the unprecedented flow of migrants crossing the southern border with Biden and Mayorkas' blessing will continue.
