House Republicans urge the Senate to approve a permanent daylight saving time measure.

Gutfeld: An Unusual Campaign from Trump

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld, alongside the ‘Gutfeld’ panel, discussed President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of Senator Tom Cotton, R-Ark., regarding Daylight Saving Time.

The push to make daylight saving time permanent is gaining traction among House Republicans, especially after Trump urged Congress to act. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., emphasized that people shouldn’t lose an hour of sunlight at the end of the day, advocating for more family time and safer communities.

“President Trump has been advocating for making daylight saving time permanent. The House Republicans responded by passing the Sunshine Protection Act with a significant majority,” Scalise noted.

HOUSE APPROVES DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME REFORM AS TRUMP SHOWS SUPPORT FOR ENDING CLOCK CHANGES

The longstanding debate over changing the clocks twice a year has resurfaced. Back in the Nixon administration, there was a 16-month trial for permanent daylight saving time, but it was cut short due to public dissatisfaction.

Nonetheless, support for a change seems to be rebuilding. Earlier in July, the House passed the Sunshine Protection Act with a bipartisan vote of 308 to 117. Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, criticizing the clock-changing process as costly and detrimental to various aspects of daily life.

However, the Senate has yet to act, and Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., mentioned that there’s currently “no clear path forward” on the issue.

TRUMP CALLS ON THE SENATE TO APPROVE BILL FOR PERMANENT DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME FOLLOWING HOUSE VOTE

This situation has added tension between Trump and the Senate’s GOP majority, as they have been at odds on multiple issues this term.

Trump’s discontent reached a peak recently when he singled out Senator Cotton, a notable opponent of the bill. “Almost everyone wants ‘The Sunshine Protection Act’ to pass, except for Tom Cotton,” Trump remarked, even sharing Cotton’s cell phone number with followers, encouraging Arkansas residents to express support.

Cotton responded by pointing out that Congress has previously attempted to establish permanent daylight saving time, but it was repealed after people experienced excessively late sunrises during winter months. “Nobody enjoys changing the clock, but in Arkansas, parents don’t want their children to go to school in the dark,” he stated.

It’s a complex issue, with opinions split among lawmakers. Some, like Cotton, are concerned about children’s safety, while others see Trump’s involvement as a potential catalyst for the bill’s revival.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune will have to navigate this amidst a busy schedule shaped by the upcoming elections.

“Senator Cotton has made his position clear,” remarked Senator Katie Britt, R-Ala. She added that a significant portion of Alabamians appear to support the idea and that discussions will likely continue after the elections.
