House set to vote on Ukraine, Israel aid bills: Live coverage

The House is scheduled to vote Saturday afternoon on House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-Louisiana) four-part plan aimed at aiding Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific allies.

The bill is expected to pass after Democrats worked with Republicans to overcome two key hurdles and took the highly unusual step of voting in favor of procedural measures to begin consideration of the bill. It is widely expected. Typically, such votes are a partisan matter, regardless of how lawmakers intend to vote on the underlying bill, but in this case, 165 Democrats opposed just 151 Republicans. He joined the committee and helped promote the bill.

If the foreign aid bill passes, it would end a long drama on Capitol Hill. The Senate passed the foreign aid package in February, but the bill faced fierce opposition from House conservatives.

Mr Johnson’s proposal essentially splits the aid into four bills, three of which would send aid to Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific, and a fourth that would soften the consensus of cautious conservatives. and other national security priorities aimed at achieving this goal. These include a ban on TikTok, provisions to use seized Russian assets to help pay for aid, and sanctions and other measures to confront Russia, China and Iran.

Despite the measure’s popularity, Mr Johnson risked his position as Speaker of the House of Commons by bringing it up.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who strongly opposes aid to Ukraine, has already filed a motion to remove Johnson from office, but has not moved to force a vote.

The House is scheduled to begin considering the bill at 9 a.m. and vote on it at 1 p.m.
