US House Speaker Mike Johnson Addresses UK’s Parliament

During his address to the UK Parliament on Tuesday, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson expressed his intention to “calm the waters” amid rising tensions between the US and its European allies, particularly regarding President Donald Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland.

This marked the first speech by a sitting US speaker in the UK Parliament and coincided with the approach to the US’s 250th anniversary. It also came after a tense exchange where President Trump criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over an agreement related to the Chagos Islands.

In his speech, Johnson mentioned, “I had a lengthy discussion with President Trump yesterday and made it clear that my goal today is to support my friends and help ease tensions.” Despite current disagreements, he underscored the enduring alliance between the US and the UK, emphasizing their shared history and values.

Johnson noted that their friendship has allowed them to address differences effectively in the past. “We will continue to do so, and I want to assure you that this remains true,” he stated.

The urgency of Johnson’s visit, he suggested, was heightened by the escalating geopolitical tensions in the last few days. He spoke about his role in demonstrating resolve against adversaries while reinforcing stability among allies.

Linking his remarks to the upcoming anniversary of American independence, Prime Minister Johnson posited this as a time not just for celebration but for reflection and renewed commitment, especially given the external threats and internal divisions facing Western nations.

He warned about increasing challenges to Western democracies posed by nations like China, Russia, and Iran, which he described as aggressive in their pursuit of power. “We’re observing a troubling disrespect for human rights and a scale of intellectual property theft we’ve never seen before,” Johnson remarked.

Johnson emphasized that President Trump is keenly aware of these threats, particularly in areas of strategic importance, such as the Arctic. He highlighted, “President Trump acknowledges the dynamics of modern threats posed by China and Russia and has made them a focus in recent discussions.”

While acknowledging space for debate among allies, Prime Minister Johnson stressed the necessity of uniting against rival powers. “We can definitely have thoughtful discussions about how to confront these threats, but we all agree that they need to be addressed,” he said.

Praising the cooperation of the UK and other allies, Johnson asserted that Trump’s “America First” stance does not equate to isolationism. He commended NATO nations for increasing defense spending and pointed to alliances like AUKUS as examples of how national interests can align with collective security.

“The commitment of NATO countries to bolster defense investment and the AUKUS alliance that enhances undersea defense collaboration show that our countries can prioritize their own interests responsibly,” he stated.

Finally, Prime Minister Johnson highlighted the importance of shared values, reminding that military strength and economic power are meaningless without a commitment to what they stand for. “A capable military is crucial, and a strong economy matters, but it’s vital we don’t lose sight of the principles we’re fighting for,” he concluded.
