House takes action against DOJ after Garland fails to hand over transcripts of Biden’s interview with special counsel

House Republicans on Tuesday sent a subpoena to the Justice Department seeking materials from Special Counsel Robert Hur’s investigation into President Joe Biden’s classified documents scandal.

On February 12, three House committees (Judiciary, Oversight, and Ways and Means) met. sent Attorney General Merrick Garland sent a letter requesting audio transcripts of the interview with Biden, in addition to certain other materials related to the investigation into Herr. The committee asked the Justice Department to submit the records by February 19, but the Justice Department ignored this deadline.

On February 16, the Department of Justice told the committee it was “working to collect and process” the requested materials. The agency cited confidentiality and confidentiality issues as the reason for the delay, but did not say when the materials would be produced.

The subpoena requires the Justice Department to provide relevant documents by 9 a.m. on March 7.

Lawmakers request documents for two important purposes.New letter sent to Garland regarding subpoena. explained:

  • Biden impeachment inquiry: “The Committee is concerned that President Biden may have possessed confidential documents relating to certain countries involved in his family’s overseas business dealings.”
  • Oversight of the Justice Department’s investigation into Donald Trump: “Additionally, the Judiciary Committee will continue to review the department’s commitment to impartial justice and its handling of the investigation and prosecution of President Donald J. Trump, President Biden’s assumed opponent in the November 2024 presidential election. We need these materials to monitor. ”

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (D) said in a statement: Said Mr. Xu’s report “made two things clear: There is a double standard of justice in this country, and Joe Biden is unfit for office.”

“Now that Special Counsel Ho’s investigation has concluded, the American people have the right to know whether President Biden was in possession of confidential documents related to his family’s overseas transactions,” he said. “The special counsel may have declined to indict the president on the grounds of memory loss, but Congress and the American people do not believe that ‘old age and good will’ is a defense to corruption.”

The investigation into Mr. Xu will once again be a hot topic next month, as the special prosecutor will visit the Capitol on March 12 to testify about his investigation and its conclusions.
