Is there anyone else worth it besides Scheffler?
It’s rare to see a golfer listed this week with odds as low as Scheffler. What does this mean? Basically, oddsmakers have decided that Scheffler will win against this field.
If you decide to go with the number one player in the world, you won’t receive a huge salary, but that’s to be expected. Scheffler has won his last two starts, the first in his signature event and the other at The Players, which is routinely referred to as “the strongest field in golf.”
No powerhouse schools will be appearing at this week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open. The tournament was Scheffler’s weakest tournament in 2024, as many top athletes chose to rest after the Florida swing to prepare for Augusta National.
Still, there’s something of value on the board.
Jason Day has had a solid season so far at Torrey Pines, finishing in the top 10 three times and missing just one.
So is Saheth Segala.
The former Pepperdine standout finished solo in second place at Sentry and had three other top-10 finishes. He recently tied for ninth at The Players after finishing tied for sixth at Bay Hill the previous week.
Theegala is a sneaky play to win at +2200, but also sees value in Day at +2800.
Texas Children’s Houston Open Longshot Picks
Doug Jim has continued to play great golf since missing the first two games of the season. Although he finished in a tie for 67th at the Valspar Championship last week due to a poor final round, Ghim has finished in the top 20 for five years in a row, with his best result being a tie for 8th at the Mexico Open.
He also tied for 16th at The Players Championship, and his chip-in on the 17th hole was notable. His par breaker there mimicked Tiger Woods’ “Better Than Most” birdie in 2001.
Additionally, Gim ranks 30th in strokes gained off the tee, making tee shots a priority at Houston’s Memorial Park Golf Course. His distance isn’t long by PGA Tour standards, but he keeps the ball in play and ranks 12th on tour in drive accuracy.
Therefore, I prefer Gim at +7000. Granted, he’s not a huge shot, but tournaments like this often produce young players winning their first PGA Tour event. If Gim continues to do so, he will also receive an invitation to the Masters.
Texas Children’s Houston Open Picks
Scottie Scheffler is simply playing in his own league.
As such, we feel obligated to bring Scheffler back to Houston. He will destroy Memorial Park from tee to green and rely on his new mallet putter to try to win his third straight start.
There’s no value there, but Scheffler has been playing so well lately that it would be a mistake not to acquire him. The only hesitation here is Scheffler hurt his neck at TPC Sawgrass on Friday. Still, he persevered against a much stronger field, firing the best round of his career on Sunday and becoming the first player to repeat as The Players Champion.
Scheffler’s stroke gain metrics have been compared to Tiger Woods, who peaked in his tee-to-green draw, but the only question is how can you not match him in this field?
