Kayden McDonald’s Journey to the NFL Draft
Kayden McDonald was sure he’d be selected in the first round of the NFL draft. However, when that didn’t happen, he and his family found themselves facing a choice: to remain in the “dressing room” or step out of the spotlight during the second round.
Returning to the green room on Friday, McDonald’s reaction to being picked by the Houston Texans was profound. He burst into tears as soon as he heard his name called.
As he embraced his family, the tears continued to flow. Making his way to the stage only heightened the emotion—especially when he shared a hug with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Speaking to ESPN’s Laura Rutledge on stage, McDonald was overwhelmed with emotion. “It’s emotional,” he expressed, tears still streaming down his face. “I know I’m meant to be here. I’m so blessed. I’m so grateful. It’s a blessing.”
Coming from Suwanee, Georgia, McDonald noted that while his neighborhood wasn’t affluent, it certainly wasn’t impoverished either. He described it as a place that provided him with a supportive environment, and he acknowledged his parents’ involvement during his recruitment to Ohio State University.
Many NFL scouts recognized his character and discipline before the draft. McDonald’s rise—from humble beginnings to being chosen in the second round—was a significant achievement, and he was visibly moved by the experience.
It’s common to watch athletes ascend to fame and fortune, but sometimes we overlook the journey that got them there—filled with challenges, setbacks, and hard work. This path often comes at a cost, and for many, getting drafted is a pivotal moment in their lives.
Some players celebrate with exuberance, while others—like Kayden McDonald—find their joy expressed through tears.
