How a 22-Year-Old Accused of Killing Charlie Kirk Came to Appear Like a Skilled Professional

In the wake of the tragic assassination of Turning Point USA founder, the internet was abuzz with speculation regarding the shooter’s identity and how he managed to elude capture for nearly two days after the incident.

How did the shooter find himself in such a position during a crowded university event, take a shot from 200 yards away with a hunting rifle, and manage to slip away unnoticed? Law enforcement officials shared insights about the plan the suspect appeared to execute, alongside a critique of the security measures in place at Utah Valley University that seemingly allowed him to escape.

An expert consulted noted that while the shooter wasn’t professional, he clearly put some thought into the assassination plan. Charlie Kirk had urged law enforcement to initiate a manhunt after the shooting at UVU on Wednesday, which led to the wrongful arrests of two individuals before they apprehended 22-year-old Tyler Robinson on Friday. Reports indicated that Kirk had personal security and six officers assigned to the event.

A mugshot of Tyler Robinson was released, identifying him as the suspect in the shooting of Kirk. He is currently in police custody.

The arrest affidavit from Utah alleges that Robinson was seen wearing dark clothing and a backpack, with a distinctive walking style, as he made his way to the rooftop overlooking the area where Kirk was speaking. Authorities suggested that his stiff movements indicated he was hiding a .30-06 rifle in his pants.

According to reports, Robinson sprang into action after retrieving the rifle from his hiding place, positioned himself for the shot, and, just a minute later, fired at Kirk, striking him around the neck and causing severe blood loss.

While the shot’s distance indicates some level of firearms familiarity, experts asserted that it didn’t reflect the skills of a professional marksman.

Michael Matlanga, a former USSS official, explained that the precision demonstrated in the shooting suggested that the shooter had spent time practicing, though he noted that most amateurs would target heads or faces rather than aiming down at a pop-up tent from a rooftop.

Others concurred that although Robinson likely practiced with the rifle, it seemed he might not have specifically aimed for Kirk’s head. Jeff Gum, a former Navy Seal, expressed that the shot could have gone astray if Robinson was adjusting his aim while pulling the trigger. Meanwhile, law enforcement speculated that he intended to hit Kirk in the chest but instead aimed too high.

After the shot, video evidence reportedly captured the suspect fleeing the scene. He climbed down from the rooftop, hid the rifle and ammunition in nearby bushes, and contacted his roommate to retrieve the items. Robinson also changed his clothes to avoid detection.

However, it seems his father recognized him from surveillance footage and reported him to the police. As authorities collected evidence, including firearms and ammunition, questions arose regarding Robinson’s decisions after the shooting. Gum remarked on the surprising risks Robinson took during his escape.

Some officials speculated that the shooter may not have anticipated forensic analysis and mishandled the firearm to avoid leaving behind evidence. They suggested he may have scouted the campus beforehand, allowing him to select an advantageous spot for the shooting.

New surveillance footage reportedly showed Robinson approaching the campus, and some believed he might have visited a few times to familiarize himself with the area. Experts noted that the event’s security was surprisingly light, which allowed the shooter to execute his plan without being detected.

Mike Glover, a former Army Special Forces member, highlighted the lack of adequate law enforcement presence at the event, citing the need for heightened security in such situations. He argued that the absence of emergency medical technicians on site represented a critical oversight.

Consultant Thomas Fitzsimmons stressed the importance of thorough preparation to prevent attacks, pointing out that local police could be limited in their capabilities during events.

Gum suggested utilizing drones for surveillance could have helped detect potential threats, citing how quickly a shooter could have caused significant harm without proper preparation in place. Matlanga emphasized that security for highly publicized political events must be meticulously planned, given the polarized nature of the participants.

James Galliano, a retired FBI agent, remarked on the significance of resource availability for effective security, lamenting that it’s a grim reality that security measures aren’t as stringent as they should be for individuals merely exchanging ideas.
