Yesterday, the Food and Drug Administration banned the use of red dye No. 3 from all foods, beverages, and ingested drugs. Food companies have set a strict deadline of January 2027 to remove synthetic ingredients from all products, while pharmaceutical companies have until 2028.
“Red No. 3 is an ingredient that has already been banned or restricted in essentially every country in the European Union, Australia, Japan, China and New Zealand due to evidence that it can cause cancer.” Masu. Sara Gonzalez.
When have these bans been implemented in other countries?
1990s – about 35 years ago. At this point, there was already sufficient evidence that this ingredient was carcinogenic. Much of this evidence was actually collected in the 1980s.
Naturally, Americans want to know why we are 35 years behind.
Sarah explains that in the 1990s, when other countries were banning the use of red dye No. 3, the FDA actually banned red dye No. 3. However, only the use of dyes in cosmetics such as lipstick and parenteral medicines such as topical analgesic treatments was prohibited.
Apparently the FDA promised to ban it from food and even oral medications, but apparently that didn't happen.
why?
The answer lies in one cocktail delicacy.
“They are under pressure from the maraschino cherry industry to keep the color of maraschino cherries neon red, and instead of protecting the American public and doing the right thing… FDA, your government is giving thousands of candies a known “You've allowed carcinogens into the baked goods, snacks, drinks, and drugs you and your children have been ingesting for nearly 35 years,” Sarah denounces.
If that wasn't already despicable, Sarah said the Delaney Clause of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, passed in 1958, prohibits food additives known to be carcinogenic to humans and animals. It is pointed out that the use of is prohibited.
So even though the FDA has been asked to ban cancer-causing products for almost 70 years, it has stopped using Red Dye No. 3 in food and medicine for 35 years to avoid the wrath of cherry companies. I have allowed it.
“Your government is colluding with lobbyists instead of doing their job. [while] We’re dying, we’re literally dying,” Sarah says fiercely.
