From NFL Lineman to Bodyguard: Jacen Esposito’s Unexpected Role
It’s likely that Jacen Esposito never imagined his first job after retiring from professional soccer would be something like this.
The former Bills offensive lineman transitioned into becoming Taylor Swift’s first bodyguard after her NFL career wrapped up in 2005. He shared his story during a recent episode of Ross Tucker’s podcast.
The unusual journey began with a phone call from Scott Swift, Taylor’s father.
“He reached out and asked what I was doing Saturday afternoon,” Esposito recalled. He found himself at a local country music station during that time.
Having nothing on his schedule, he agreed and ended up standing alongside Taylor the entire time.
Esposito explained that they needed someone sizable because there had been an incident where someone attempted to hug the young star. So, Scott and Taylor wanted an “intimidating big guy” to provide some protection.
“Scott immediately thought of me,” Esposito noted, adding that Swift’s first tour bus was present, and they performed a few songs for the audience. He also worked at another Swift show in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Esposito, undrafted out of Kutztown University, had signed with the Patriots as an undrafted rookie free agent before spending a couple of years on the Bills’ practice squad.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 300 pounds, he was certainly a fit for the role.
Scott Swift played a crucial role in his daughter’s early career, organizing performances, appearances, and sending out demo tapes until the release of Taylor’s debut album, “Taylor Swift,” in 2006 when she was just 16.
Swift continued to perform at trade shows and connect with local stations nationwide to expand her fan base.
She even carried a silver guitar, singing the national anthem for over 40,000 fans at Game 3 of the 2008 World Series between the Phillies and Rays.
Not long after that, she released her second album, “Fearless,” in November of that same year.
As her fame skyrocketed, so did the need for more bodyguards, leading to a growing team over the years.
Today, Swift is recognized as one of the most prominent music artists of her generation, with 14 Grammy Awards to her name and a recent marriage to Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce during the Fourth of July weekend at Madison Square Garden.
