Former President Donald Trump has revealed how his youngest son, Barron Trump, reacted to the shocking news that his father had been shot in an assassination attempt.
“Barron was outside having a tennis lesson,” Trump, 78, told Fox News' Mark Levin about the moment his 18-year-old son was informed of the shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13.
“He's a good tennis player. And then someone comes running up and says, 'Baron! Baron! Your father's been shot!'
The Republican presidential candidate said his son responded immediately.
“My son loves his dad. He's a good kid, a good student, actually a good athlete. And he came running up and said, 'Mom! What's going on? What's going on?'”
Trump added that his wife, Melania, was watching the rally on television and actually saw the assassination attempt happen.
“She couldn't believe it. She actually saw it live, can you imagine? And I stood up and let everybody know I was OK,” he said, noting how he pumped his fist in the air moments after being thrown to the ground by Secret Service agents.
“I let everybody know I was OK, but it was a big hit. It was a big hit.”
But the former first lady remains unable to speak about the assassination attempt, Trump said.
“She can't even talk about it, but that's okay because it means she likes me,” he said.
Trump's comments come as multiple agencies continue to investigate the shooting, in which 20-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks escaped security and opened fire on the 45th president from a rooftop during a crowded campaign rally.
Meanwhile, the Secret Service has come under intense scrutiny for security lapses before the attack.
In the wake of the furore, the agency's embattled head, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned and at least five agency employees were moved to administrative roles, meaning they have no input into operational planning.
