How BBVA is utilizing AI to give employees back 3 hours each week

BBVA is broadening its AI initiatives for employees after noticing that those who utilize artificial intelligence find it beneficial in saving work time.

This Wednesday, the Bank of Spain revealed its collaboration with Google Cloud, which will make Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, available to all staff. This partnership means BBVA employees can access AI-driven Gemini apps, Google Workspace, and Notebooklm, Google’s AI research assistant.

This marks the second time BBVA has integrated a generative AI tool into its workforce. Last year, they secured 3,300 ChatGPT Enterprise Licenses through a partnership with OpenAI.

By May 2025, 83% of authorized users in the bank reported using ChatGPT daily, which resulted in the creation of about 3,000 specialized assistants for various tasks. The automation facilitated by BBVA’s ChatGPT encompasses activities like translation, document summarization, coding help, and legal analysis of financial documents.

The bank highlighted that using ChatGPT for task automation has saved employees an average of 2.8 hours per week. This extra time allows staff to focus on more strategic or customer-facing tasks rather than rote memorization. Consequently, BBVA increased the number of ChatGPT Enterprise licenses to 11,000 by May 2025.

The latest agreement with Google Cloud aims to have 100,000 employees globally integrating AI technology into their daily responsibilities.

Juan Ortigosa, the global head of workplace at BBVA, commented, “We anticipate that widespread use of generative AI in these tools will enhance productivity and improve the work experience for all staff, regardless of their role.”

Additionally, the bank is rolling out a mandatory AI training program for employees. Named “AI Express,” this program aligns with the European Union AI Law and BBVA’s internal data protection and security policies. Access to Google Workspace through Gemini, alongside the Gemini app and NotebookLM, will be exclusively for employees who have completed the training.
