Dyan Cannon Finds Peace Through Faith in Hollywood
Dyan Cannon has always sought meaning in her life. Recently, at 88, she shared that her enduring faith in God has provided her with the lasting peace she needed while navigating Hollywood’s complexities. She’s now co-hosting a podcast called “God’s Table Hollywood,” which explores faith-based discussions around purpose.
Reflecting on her journey, Cannon admitted that she struggled until she embraced her identity as a proud “god girl.” She expressed, “My main quest was to understand why I was here and who I really was. Understanding has given me freedom, and that’s what we’ll dive into on the podcast.”
Life hasn’t been straightforward for Cannon. She recounted some of her previous coping mechanisms, saying, “I’ve tried drugs, and pills, and… well, everything. But those felt like Band-Aids that were just not effective.” Ultimately, she found a stable belief system that supported her thoughts during trying times.
Cannon candidly noted, “I expected a man to make me happy. Can you believe that? I thought it was his job. But that’s impossible. Learning how to think for myself transformed many aspects of my life.”
Her marriage to Cary Grant is certainly part of her story. They had a significant age difference, marrying when she was just 28 and he was 62. Despite welcoming their daughter, Jennifer, their relationship was turbulent and ended in divorce just three years later. “I wish I’d known that I could still find joy on my own,” she reflected.
After their split, Cannon explored other relationships but also dealt with emotional challenges, like a breakdown that led her to a mental health facility. “I felt trapped, and most of my friends didn’t even know what I was going through,” she shared.
Faith remains a cornerstone of Cannon’s life. Raised with both Jewish and Christian influences, she has come to believe that there is one God who loves everyone equally. “I’ve lost friends because of my beliefs, but perhaps that’s for the best,” she remarked. “It’s better to know who truly stands with you.”
Cannon talks about her prayerful approach to life, mentioning her experiences hosting “God’s Party” on CBS for over a decade and emphasizing that love is the highest attribute of God. “There’s a capital L in the love I feel; it’s constant and unwavering,” she explained.
Still, expressing her faith openly has come with its challenges. “I’ve lost so-called friends because of it. But I think everyone should choose which angels they want in their lives,” she said, underscoring the importance of authenticity.
As for dating? Cannon is open but not actively pursuing it. “I enjoy my single life now. It took me a while to realize I could be happy alone,” she admitted, reflecting on past pressures to be married and have children. “There’s freedom in knowing you don’t have to settle for less.”
When asked what advice she’d offer her younger self, Cannon laughed, “Get out of there.” She cherishes the memories but also acknowledges her past mistakes. “Looking back, I wouldn’t give up my career again for marriage. Life can be managed in a supportive partnership.”
Ultimately, Cannon’s message revolves around genuine connections and being true to oneself. “I’m not sure about marriage again, but I’d love to share moments with someone meaningful.” In her quest for fulfillment, she spots potential blessings ahead, hoping for companionship when the time is right.
