How Brandon Banfield is said to have planned his wife's murder based on a disturbing fantasy involving sexual violence

Brandon Banfield, a Virginia Department of Revenue employee, felt that divorce “wasn’t an option” for him. Instead, he wanted to leave his wife, Christine, and elope with a Brazilian au pair, Juliana Pérez Magalhães, whom he had been seeing for about two months.

Bafflingly, Banfield concocted a disturbing scheme to lure someone into his home under the pretense of a violent fantasy involving his wife. The details reveal that he planned to shoot the individual, stab Christine, and stage everything to project himself as a tragic hero.

This appalling narrative first surfaced during Christine Banfield’s murder trial, with testimony from Magalhães, 25, who described the meticulous planning while claiming she was just following Banfield’s directions.

The grim plot started in October 2021 when the Banfiels hired Magalhães as a live-in nanny for their 4-year-old daughter, paying her $200 weekly. Before long, around July or August 2022, she became involved with Banfield, significantly shifting her role from mere caregiver.

By October, Banfield had made up his mind to leave his wife, yet he sought to avoid the burdens of divorce and custody issues, according to Magalhães. So, he opted for murder instead. He developed a plan to find and attract strangers online who would unwittingly bring horror to his wife’s final moments.

Allegedly, Banfield created a profile on a BDSM website using Christine’s name, engaging with various users who had disturbing interests. Magalhães participated as well, habitually logging on when Christine was home to maintain the illusion that it was actually her online.

They coordinated to keep up a digital facade, logging off and hiding their activities to maintain an alibi. Magalhães mentioned that they engaged with numerous individuals interested in their dark fantasies, but Banfield became wary of those urging in-person meetings elsewhere.

Eventually, they connected with 38-year-old Joseph Ryan, who was not only intrigued by the fantasy but also sent a photo of a weapon he claimed he would bring. A call from Magalhães, impersonating Christine, further solidified Ryan’s involvement.

Banfield spent time installing security cameras around their home and even soundproofing the windows, all part of his elaborate setup, Magalhães testified. They devised a plan for Ryan to enter through an unlocked door while executing their twisted scheme against Christine.

At their grim appointment on February 24, 2024, Banfield confirmed Ryan’s arrival, manipulating circumstances to isolate Christine, then left under the pretense of taking their daughter out. They positioned themselves nearby, waiting for the confrontation.

When Ryan finally called, he alerted Christine, which was intended to create a false sense of a normal situation. Banfield, returning to the house, then opened the door to chaos, with Christine alarmed and Ryan caught off guard.

The ensuing violence saw Banfield shoot Ryan in the head and then turn on Christine, stabbing her multiple times, leading to her death. Magalhães recounted how she crouched in terror, covering her ears but unable to escape the brutal reality.

Afterwards, they attempted to make it look like Ryan had attacked Christine, even as he lay dying from his wounds. It was an appalling scene when police arrived.

In the aftermath, Magalhães moved into a new place, inadvertently stepping into the ghost of her actions, yet maintaining a link to her past by keeping a photo of the Banfiels. Their brief respite ended when she was arrested in October 2023, eventually pleading guilty to manslaughter a year later.

Banfield was taken into custody in September 2024, a month before her plea deal, pleading not guilty to aggravated murder. His defense claims that Magalhães’ testimony was forced and untrustworthy. If found guilty, he could spend the rest of his life in prison, with the trial projected to unfold over the next few weeks.
