How Braves, Phillies, Nationals, Marlins stack up

The post previews NL East starting the MLB Spring Training Set.

Atlanta Braves

2024: 89-73

manager: Brian Sknit Car (10th season)

Spring Training Site: Northport, Florida.

Important additions: The almost quiet offseason saw the Braves landed Juricson's Far in late January, boosting the lineup after the Padres and the breakout season. Brian de la Cruz has been added, with numbers to start the season with the right field platoon along with Jarrred Kerenic.

Important losses: Atlanta lost some complementary pieces and one huge piece at Max Fried, who signed with the Yankees. Charlie Morton, Jorge Soller, Ramon Laureano and plenty of bullpen options, especially the new Met AJ Minter.

Storylines to watch: The Braves added more internally, so some didn't import tons outside. Spencer Strider, who missed everything from last season due to an elbow surgery, should return to the front of the spin early this season. If he looks like him, then the group that includes Chris Sale, Spencer Schwenbach and Reynaldo Lopez would be horrifying. Ronald Acknya Jr., who comes out of his second torn ACL, is also not ready for opening day, but could soon be active.

Miami Marlins

2024: 62-100

manager: Clayton McCullough (first season)

Spring Training Site: Jupiter, Florida.

Important additions: Miami has signed a major league (split) contract with one player. 27-year-old infielder Eric Waggaman played 18 games with the Angels in his MLB debut last year. In a pair of deals showing they are not trying to compete this season, they landed infield prospects Max Acosta and Matt Marvis, who can see the time of this year.

Important losses: The Marlins cashed out trade chips for Jake Berger, the most frequent hit Jake Berger last season, third place, flipped utility man Vidal Bourjean, and skipped Shoemaker to a more respected manager. I let it go. Last season, they offloaded Louis Arááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááá

Storyline to watch: How much future value will the Marlins be able to acquire at the 2025 trade deadline? Strong division tanking teams don't want to compete, but they have the talent to seduce poor teams. How will Sandy Alcantara be seen in his first season since Tommy John's surgery? He is the same person as Eury Pérez, who underwent the procedures in April last year and is only 21 years old. RyanWeathers, Edward Cabrera and Max Meyer were able to intrigue.

Philadelphia Phillies

2024: 95-67

manager: Rob Thomson (4th season, 3rd complete)

Spring Training Site: Clearwater, Florida.

Important additions: The Phillies aren't overly flashy, but they filled in the hole. Jesus Luzard fills in the spinning of any rival. Max Kepler predicts he will be the daily left fielder. The Jordan Romano should fit behind the bullpen. Swingman Joe Ross offers several spinning depths.

Bryce Harper and the Phillies are active champions. Corey Shipkin for the New York Post

Important losses: The bullpen would look different without Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez, who were lost in free agency. Austin Hayes is currently with the Reds, and Spencer Turnbull has not signed after filling both the rotation and bullpen holes last season.

Storylines to watch: The powerful but aging core hasn't won the World Series yet, so it certainly seems like time is running out. After an early exit at the NLDS last season, the Phillies will shake up the group in hopes of maximizing the best years of Bryce Harper, Treturner, Kyle Schwarber, JT Realmuto, Zach Wheeler and Aaron Nora I was hoping for it. At least so far, the Phillies have roughly run it a year older. Will this kind of patience/inaction be rewarded?

Washington Nationals

2024: 71-91

manager: Dave Martinez (8th season)

Spring Training Site: West Palm Beach, Florida.

Important additions: The biggest imports came from trade rather than free agents. Nationals Landing can trust Nathaniel Low, one base move that can be trusted in swaps with the Rangers. Otherwise they would try to improve around the edge of the roster, perhaps bringing back dh Josh Bell, filling up the rosary for infield depth, and medging the original Jorge Lopez as bullpen depth, Created an interesting rotation: Trevor Williams has been re-signed, and Michael Soroka and Japanese left-wing ogasawara should compete for the spot.

Important losses: The first happy and later sad Patrick Corbyn era ended. Joey Gallo, Ildemaro Vargas and Joey Meneseth set out for free agency. The bullpen has been rebuilt without Kyle Finnegan and Tanner Rainey.

Storylines to watch: Washington has not exceeded .500 since winning the World Series in 2019 (it's rarely approaching). After a subtle offseason, can internal talent make the leap to relate to NAT? Dillancrue, James Wood and Jacob Young made up a young outfield filled with stars, and the Brady House of three bases could quickly arrive.
