A Chance for Deandre Ayton to Change His Narrative

Ayton has transitioned from a wildcard to a crucial player for the Lakers in their second-round playoff matchup against the Thunder.

“He’s the guy that changes our ceiling the most,” commented Lakers coach JJ Reddick.

He’ll need to contend with a challenging frontcourt featuring Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, both known for their impressive rim protection.

In Game 1, he put up respectable numbers, achieving a game-high 12 rebounds along with 10 points.

However, he must elevate his game further.

The Lakers are counting on Ayton to perform like the first overall pick he once was. They need him to step up and mitigate the impact of Holmgren, who scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. It’s essential for Ayton to give his full effort on both ends and dominate the paint.

His contributions were vital in the Lakers’ earlier victory over the Rockets.

In his first playoff run since 2023, he averaged 11.8 points and 10.8 rebounds over 31 minutes. Just shy of surpassing Rockets center Alperen Sengun, he had standout moments, particularly in Game 5, where he scored 18 points and secured 17 rebounds. And in Game 6, he racked up 16 rebounds.

When Ayton is at his best, the Lakers shine. Yet, his performances have been inconsistent.

That inconsistency was a key factor in the Suns trading him to the Trail Blazers in September 2023, leading to a contract buyout last June.

Signing with the Lakers this past summer offered Ayton a fresh chance for reinvention. But his struggles continued even after moving to Los Angeles.

Frustration set in when he felt underutilized, leading to some discouraging performances. At times he played dominantly, yet other times he seemed to fall back into old habits.

His inexperience has shown, notably when he infamously declared in the locker room, “I’m not Clint Capela,” indicating his struggle to embrace his role fully.

However, things have shifted this spring, with the Lakers achieving a fantastic 16-2 record. This time, he seems more accepting of his position, focusing on contributing rather than seeking the spotlight.

“DA had a great season,” Reddick noted. “He helped us get past Houston. His consistency over the last couple of months has been remarkable.”

Now, Ayton needs to dig even deeper.

He must make Holmgren reconsider driving to the basket. Physicality and discipline are crucial, alongside seizing rebounds.

In Game 1, he helped the Lakers start strong with a 7-0 lead, actively participating in plays. He made a putback layup and grabbed defensive rebounds, showing energy all around.

Yet, the second half was a different story.

He quickly ran into foul trouble early in the third quarter, limiting his time on the court. In the fourth, he managed just one rebound and one attempted shot in nearly nine minutes.

The Thunder scored an alarming 48 points in the paint. That’s just not acceptable.

Before facing the Thunder, Ayton was aware of the challenge ahead.

“Protecting the paint is crucial for me in this series,” he stated. “They score over 50 points in the paint and can be really difficult to stop.”

This is Ayton’s moment to showcase his capabilities.

His initial efforts were commendable, but mediocrity won’t cut it. Greatness is the goal.

The Lakers depend on him, and he, in turn, needs the team.
