Turbulent Changes at “SNL”

Michael Longfellow, a 31-year-old comedian from “Saturday Night Live,” learned about his dismissal from the program while he was at an airport in Utah.

He was waiting to board his flight when his agent called, informing him he wouldn’t be returning for the show’s 51st season, as reported by various sources.

According to reports, Lorne Michaels, the creator of “SNL,” did not respond to Longfellow’s call for clarification.

Last month, Michaels indicated that a significant shakeup was underway and that several cast members would be leaving.

Longfellow was one of four personalities who were let go, along with well-known cast members like Heidi Gardner, Devon Walker, and newcomer Emile Wakim.

In an Instagram post dated August 28, Longfellow confirmed, “I won’t be returning to the fourth season of SNL.” He joined as a feature player in 2022 and was promoted to the main cast the following year.

He expressed gratitude, stating, “Lorne, you gave me the biggest job in the world, and it changed my life. You even got my mother on TV. Thank you.”

Interestingly, other cast members have also shared their experiences, with Walker mentioning that the show’s atmosphere wasn’t always friendly. He described it as “toxic sometimes,” noting that the environment had its challenges.

In a previous podcast, Gardner noted that her work on “SNL” had become “a little tough” due to fatigue in generating fresh ideas. She reflected on how, with the length of her time on the show, she felt she had written numerous sketches.

Another former writer, Celeste Im, mentioned her own departure, revealing that she “screamed at random famous men.”

As the show prepares for its new season, it will welcome new additions, including comedians Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Calhane, Ben Marshall, Cam Patterson, and Veronica Slow Kouzka.

The 51st season of “Saturday Night Live” is set to premiere on NBC on October 4th.
