How Justin Fields of the Jets reacted to criticism from Woody Johnson about his performance

Jets Coach Defends Owner Amid Blame on Quarterback

On Wednesday, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn came to the defense of team owner Woody Johnson, attempting to shift focus away from criticism directed at quarterback Justin Fields.

Fields, for his part, seemed uninterested in addressing the situation.

“I didn’t have any comments,” he said after practice. “You all know I don’t do social media at all.”

In comments that Fields reportedly missed, Johnson attributed the team’s 0-7 record to the struggles of the starting quarterback. “We need to be able to complete passes to be effective,” Johnson stated, hinting at the issues plaguing the offense.

Glenn noted that he brought up Johnson’s remarks in team meetings, yet Fields admitted he was unaware of those discussions when asked.

When the essence of Johnson’s comments was relayed to him, Fields replied with a shrug.

“I’m not concerned about that,” Fields reiterated, stating he is preparing as if he’ll start on Sunday against Cincinnati, even though Glenn hasn’t confirmed the starting quarterback. “I know I need to improve, and we all need to play better as a team. Regardless of how the offense performs, I’ll take the blame—that’s just part of the job.”

It’s noteworthy that struggling quarterbacks often face public scrutiny, yet Johnson’s comments were unusual. Fields views Johnson’s opinion as just another external perspective.

As for a possible meeting with Johnson, Fields expressed disinterest.

“I don’t think anything will change if we talk,” he said. “It won’t make me play better or feel more confident. So, discussing it seems pointless.”

Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract this offseason, mentioned that being benched could raise questions about his future with the team. Tyrod Taylor, who played in the second half of last Sunday’s loss, would also face scrutiny if he steps in.

Would Fields consider requesting a trade if his playing time diminishes?

“I prefer not to answer those hypothetical questions,” Fields said. “They don’t help me or the team. My focus is entirely on Sunday’s game.”

Linebacker Quincy Williams is set to return from a shoulder injury and was a full participant in practice. Cornerback Michael Carter II also practiced after coming off concussion protocol.

Wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who injured his knee last week, did not participate in practice on Sunday.

Limited participants included running back Breece Hall (knee), defensive end Jermaine Johnson II (ankle), and cornerback Quantez Stigers (hip). Cornerback Sauce Gardner (concussion), linebacker Cam Jones (hip), running back Kene Nwanwu (concussion), tight end Stone Smart (quad), and defensive lineman Jay Tufre did not practice.

The Jets have added defensive back JT Woods to their practice squad.
