Steelers Await Aaron Rodgers’ Decision
The anticipation surrounding Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers isn’t over yet.
Team President Art Rooney II recently communicated that the organization is prepared to wait a bit longer for the four-time MVP to make a decision regarding his football career. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, that message came through on Wednesday.
Rooney’s remarks echoed his earlier thoughts from April, during a talk with reporters at the NFL owners’ meetings in Palm Beach, Florida. He mentioned they wouldn’t be waiting “forever, but… a little longer.”
Despite a subdued season with the Jets, Rodgers remains the Steelers’ primary target for a quarterback this offseason.
The 41-year-old Super Bowl champion has visited the Pittsburgh facility and remains in contact with key figures on the team, including coach Mike Tomlin. However, during a recent appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” he indicated that personal matters are currently taking precedence.
“I’m trying to be open to everything, but I’m not particularly attached to anything when it comes to this decision,” Rodgers shared. “I’ve gone through a lot in my personal life and need to prioritize that right now.”
He also clarified that he is not “bound to anyone.”
Even if Rodgers doesn’t provide a clear decision soon, his former Packers coach, Matt LaFleur, expressed his belief that Rodgers is likely headed to Pittsburgh.
“I’m confident they are doing what they need to do. I’m really hoping he becomes a Pittsburgh Steeler,” LaFleur said during his appearance on Up & Adams.
Rodgers spent the first 18 years of his NFL career with Green Bay, playing under LaFleur from 2019 to 2022. He was traded to the Jets prior to the 2023 season but suffered an Achilles injury after just four plays, cutting his time in New York short.
In 2024, Rodgers bounced back and played all 17 games, throwing for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. However, the Jets finished the season with a disappointing 5-12 record and missed the playoffs.
The Jets are now moving forward under new coaches Aaron Glenn and Darren Mooey, having parted ways with Rodgers and signing former Steelers QB Justin Fields in free agency.
They are set to kick off their 2025 season at home against the Steelers on September 7th, but it remains uncertain whether Rodgers will be in a black and gold uniform by then.
