Mel Gibson Criticizes California Leadership Over Recent Unrest
Oscar-winning actor Mel Gibson has called out California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for their poor handling of violent riots against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that erupted in Los Angeles last weekend.
In a recent segment on “Aroyo Grande,” hosted by Raymond Arroyo—a contributor to Fox News—Gibson expressed his discontent with their leadership.
He emphasized a perceived lack of civil action from both politicians, mentioning their past failures during wildfires in Los Angeles, pointing to a broader pattern of incompetence.
“Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass have already shown their ineffective leadership during the Los Angeles wildfires,” Gibson stated. “Now, as we face increasing lawlessness and civil unrest, it’s more evident than ever that they struggle to respond effectively in crisis situations. Whether it’s sheer incompetence or something more sinister, the reality is harsh.”
He further questioned how long residents of Los Angeles would put up with their disruptive decisions masquerading as leadership. “It’s time to empower capable leaders committed to restoring our communities and ensuring our safety,” he asserted.
Gibson, who was named a Hollywood special ambassador by President Donald Trump earlier this year, himself faced losses when his home was consumed by the Palisade fire on January 7.
His outspoken comments on the situation have sparked speculation about a possible future run for governor of California.
In February, Gibson participated in an initiative aimed at improving conditions in California, reminding everyone of his past work like directing The Passion of the Christ. He made an appearance at a press conference in Altadena on February 27.
“There’s really no excuse for the governor or the mayor to mishandle this situation and fail to prepare for what was clearly on the horizon,” Gibson commented, again addressing Newsom and Bass, as reported by KTLA.
“Was it incompetence? Indifference? Carelessness? Absolutely,” he concluded.
