CBS host Margaret Brennan pressed Biden-Harris campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond about the growing list of Democrats who are no longer supporting President Joe Biden as the party’s nominee.
Richmond appeared on “Face the Nation” Sunday morning to discuss the president’s ongoing reelection effort despite concerns within his party. During the interview, Brennan noted that the “main talking point” of the campaign has not been about issues, but rather has been centered on lawmakers calling for the president to step down. “You’ve talked about your own party members continuing to oppose your party’s nominee. This is the mainstream conversation right now. It’s not all about the messaging you want to put forward on the issues,” Brennan said. “How much time do you have left before Democrats’ belittling of Joe Biden really starts to hurt him? When do you think he’ll actually be able to win over his party?”
“The president is going to be campaigning. He’s not trying to convince his own party,” Richmond countered. “He’s trying to convince voters that he gets up every day and fights for them, and that the guy on the other side, who has lost his mind and only thinks about himself, is going to continue to divide this country and sell out the working class and working families to the billionaire class,” Richmond said.
Richmond said lawmakers would “continue to reflect and discuss” while the president’s team was working on “the challenges of this campaign”, noting that Democratic lawmakers had raised “concerns”.

“The president believes he’s the best person to beat Donald Trump. I agree. That’s not the case, by the way. Donald Trump ran in the Republican primary three times and beat dozens of candidates. No one could beat him,” Richmond said.
“He won the election. Joe Biden is the only person in American history to have beaten Donald Trump, and he’s in the best position to do it again. There’s so much at stake,” Richmond continued. “We should really be focusing on what’s at stake: the personalities of these two people, the record-breaking performance of this past administration, and we should be going door to door and climbing mountains to make the case that this race matters and that Joe Biden is the person who can beat Donald Trump.”
Biden’s low approval ratings and concerns about his mental health have soared since he was seen struggling to finish his sentence and freezing mid-sentence during a debate with former President Donald Trump. Since the June 27 debate, more than a dozen Democratic congressional representatives and several Democratic senators have publicly expressed concern about Biden remaining the party’s nominee.
Democratic Sens. Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Jon Tester of Montana were the latest to call on Friday for Biden to step aside from the campaign, with independent Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who caucuses with the Democrats, joining the list on Sunday.
Recent AP-NORC Center for Public Policy Research Survey carried out Seven in 10 adults, including 65% of Democrats, no longer support Biden as their party’s presidential nominee from July 11 to July 15. The share of Democrats who are dissatisfied with Biden has risen nearly 10 points, from 38% before the June debate to 48% in the latest AP-NORC poll.
