Rising Anti-Semitism in America

Recent incidents, like the shocking attack on a young couple outside a Jewish museum and a violent rally in Boulder, Colorado, highlight a troubling trend. It appears a growing number of Americans—especially younger generations—are being influenced to harbor negative feelings towards Jews, fueled by the underlying prejudices that affect other minority groups.

It’s crucial for those in leadership to take a firm stand and translate words into meaningful action, ensuring protection for the Jewish community against the ongoing battle with anti-Semitism. It raises the question: how did we end up in a situation where nearly 68% of all religion-based hate crimes target such a small Jewish population?

For generations, Jews have been scapegoated by extremists, but now, anti-Semitism seems to be spreading among elites, especially on college campuses. In fact, a significant spike in hate incidents occurred in September 2023, with incidents on universities increasing dramatically—over 600%, according to recent studies.

Students don’t inherently harbor prejudice; they’re taught to feel this way. There are certainly educators who misuse their positions to instill negative views in their students. Meanwhile, many educational administrators seem unable or unwilling to address the anti-Semitism that circulates in their institutions, amplified by social media.

Home to “safe spaces” and codes designed to curb “microaggressions,” these same environments have often failed to protect Jewish students, who sometimes find themselves barred from key areas like classrooms and libraries.

It’s essential to emphasize that students should not face threats or discrimination based on their faith or background. All forms of prejudice—be it religious, racial, or ethnic—are fundamentally wrong and not reflective of American values.

As leaders, especially where education is concerned, we have a duty to ensure the safety of every student. To counteract the increasing hate, recent executive orders and laws have been enacted to address anti-Semitism similar to other forms of discrimination recognized by federal and state laws.

Our latest initiatives require public schools to actively confront anti-Semitism within their frameworks. We are also urging the adoption of a Code of Student Conduct that defines anti-Semitism in accordance with international standards and guarantees protections under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1965.

States like Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma have started assigning Title VI coordinators to oversee reports of anti-Semitism and discrimination within public school systems.

In Virginia, collaboratives are forming to ensure those experiencing anti-Semitic acts receive the justice they deserve. Regular reports will provide a clearer picture of the issues at hand.

We’re also working on a better system for monitoring reported anti-Semitism, reinforcing the message that complaints will be taken seriously. It’s vital to show victims that there will be a strong response to their concerns.

Moreover, enhancing education about anti-Semitism and Jewish American history from the earliest grades is a priority. Research indicates a troubling decline in Holocaust knowledge among American students.

We view the fight against anti-Semitism as a crucial element of civil rights in America. Past racial conflicts have shown how some have manipulated concepts like “states’ rights” and “majority rule,” and today, similar tactics are employed to misinterpret “free speech” as a justification for targeting Jewish students.

While we support free speech, it’s crucial to recognize that this right does not shield threats of violence or harm.

Taking a stand against prejudice requires bravery. Unfortunately, many leaders in education and government seem overwhelmed by the politicization of anti-Semitism. However, we are committed to championing this cause as part of the civil rights movement of our time, and we urge governors and state legislators nationwide to join this critical effort.

Ultimately, decisive action against anti-Semitism can rally all people of goodwill together to uphold America’s promises for future generations.
