Slovakia’s Prime Minister Roberto Fico was shot and hospitalized today after a cabinet meeting in downtown Handlova.

Footage from the aftermath of the attack shows his bodyguards escorting him into an armored limousine.

Daily newspaper Denik N, whose reporters saw the prime minister being lifted into a car by security personnel, reported that the suspected gunman had been detained by police, according to AFP news agency.

Eastern European media NEXTA reported in a post on X, citing local reports, that the prime minister had been shot multiple times.

“One in the abdomen and one in the head. The condition is serious,” NEXTA said in a post.

EU Prime Minister Ursula von der Leyen condemned the “despicable attack” on Roberto Fico.

“I strongly condemn the despicable attack on Prime Minister Roberto Fico. Such acts of violence have no place in our society and undermine our most precious common good: democracy. Our thoughts are with Prime Minister Fico and his family,” von der Leyen said on the X program. .

Slovak President Zuzana Caputova condemned the “brutal and reckless” attack on the prime minister. In her statement, she called it a “brutal and reckless attack” and said: “I am shocked. At this critical moment, Mr. Robert Fico has shown tremendous strength to recover from the attack. I hope that you will.”
