Elon Musk's SpaceX launched Starship with a superheavy rocket over the weekend and successfully recovered the rocket's first stage during an unmanned test flight. In a remarkable feat of engineering, the first stage descended to Earth in a controlled manner and was secured to the launch platform by a mechanical arm. This accomplishment should have been an emotional moment for all Americans. But many leftists used social media express anger Trump supporters were responsible for this historic event.
As Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance hailed the victory of technology, commentators said: confusing statementwondered how the dream of space travel became culturally associated with Republicans. So-called progressives have built their political strategy around demonizing the very elements that make scientific progress possible. Now they are shocked to learn that their opponent is considered a champion with a bright future.
Those who are willing to sacrifice and persevere will eventually reach for the stars and achieve their dreams, escaping the suffocating, stifling, and resentful grip of the left.
When I was young, space exploration seemed inevitable in the near future. The United States won the space race in the 1960s, and shuttle missions were common, although astronauts did not land on celestial bodies for more than a decade. We were landing remote rovers on Mars, and most of us thought a crewed mission to Mars was well within reach.
The dream of exploring the stars was politically bipartisan. Republicans hailed the patriotism and pride associated with the feat, while Democrats saw it as a step toward a Star Trek-inspired vision of a post-scarcity utopia.
Ironically, as the United States solidified its status as the world's sole superpower, its drive to prove its superiority through space exploration waned. NASA's performance became less impressive, and many of its predictions were clearly overestimated. While Republicans began to see the program as bloated government spending that needed to be cut, Democrats saw it as an opportunity to redirect funds to their supporters around the globe. NASA limped along with fewer launches and postponed major projects, and while science fiction remained part of popular culture, the idea of real-world space travel seemed to fade into the background.
Regardless of what you think of Elon Musk, it's hard not to see echoes of Ayn Rand's “Man of Industry” in his struggle against the systems that try to keep him tied to the earth. SpaceX has certainly benefited from government contracts, but it has also battled oppressive regulations and lawsuits to accomplish things governments thought impossible. The left's outcry that SpaceX, which has proven successful outside of government control, should be nationalized highlights the parasitic nature of the progressive regime they have created.
Musk may not fit the mold of a typical conservative, and it's questionable whether he ever set out to become a politician, but his ambition is undeniable. He and many other leaders and entrepreneurs realize that the dominant left-wing government will make their grand vision impossible. Progressives have embraced politics driven by favoritism and malice. Their policies promote a culture of envy and entitlement while punishing success and innovation. Ambition is now seen as dangerous and prosperity as something to be collectively plundered for political gain.
Democrats have turned universities into centers of woke indoctrination, denying accomplishments in favor of racial and sexual biases that favor their own clientele. What started as an infection in the softer fields of the humanities has now spread to the hard sciences. Wake ideology labeled key aspects of the scientific method as cultural imperialism and turned mathematics into a symbol of white supremacy. Valuing the written word, prioritizing punctuality, valuing efficiency, and striving for perfection are qualities essential to launching humans into space, but they are now part of colonial oppression. It is labeled as a form.
I have always been a fan of science fiction and fascinated by space travel, but I never fully understood its importance as a social ambition. There are many unresolved problems on earth. Why not focus our efforts here?
I have come to understand the role that boldness and greatness play in the health of civilization. The Western man, or the “Faustian man” as Oswald Spengler described it, has a deep desire to discover and expand. In many ways, the United States was built on frontier expansion and domestication. Without new frontiers to explore, Western society seems to turn inward and consume itself. As the final frontier, space invites us to greatness.
As it turns out, progressives are right about one thing. That is, space exploration has become the domain of the right wing through relentless attacks on their accomplishments, ambitions, and accomplishments. Leftist ideology cannot tolerate the concept of great individuals or natural hierarchies. As a result, they are unable to achieve the results that those people are capable of.
We are equal in worth before God, but not in ability or accomplishment. Those who aspire to greatness must embody the very characteristics that the Democratic Party has demonized. It is those who are willing to sacrifice and persevere who will ultimately reach for the stars and realize their dreams away from the suffocating, stifling, resentful grip of the left.
