How the Indiana Fever have managed to stay competitive without Caitlin Clark

Indiana Fever Faces Challenges Amid Injuries

Kate Clark is a key player for the Indiana Fever, but this year has been tough for her. The 2024 Rookie of the Year has spent more time on the bench due to injuries than actually on the court. First, she dealt with a quadriceps strain, followed quickly by a groin strain. Now, she’s sidelined with an All-Star break injury, and the Fever doesn’t have a timeline for her return.

At the start of the season, many believed the Fever could compete for a top-three finish in the WNBA. Clark’s absence has complicated these plans a bit, yet the team has managed to find some rhythm without her. Currently, they sit sixth in the league with a 16-12 record, gradually improving over the last few seasons. Clark has only participated in 13 out of 28 games, which means she’s spent more time off the court than on it this season.

So, how has the Fever managed to stay afloat without their star player? There are a few reasons. First off, Indiana made the most of the free agency market mid-season. After Clark’s initial injury, the Fever signed Ahli McDonald, who was released by Rusk. According to a linked analysis, McDonald was one of the best options available at her position during that period. The Fever also recently added Chloe Bibby to their roster for the rest of the season.

Indiana is also leaning heavily on the performance of Aliyah Boston, the No. 1 draft pick from 2023. Boston has been averaging 15.5 points per game this season, which is a slight increase compared to last year. She’s taking about 11.3 shots per game, and focusing on her development seems to be a solid strategy to keep the team competitive while waiting for Clark to recover. Clark has an excellent rapport with Boston in the post, so when she returns, she won’t need to readjust too much; her game can flow back to normal, further boosting Boston’s already impressive performance.

In the meantime, McDonald has stepped into Clark’s position as she heals, elevating Boston’s partnership with her. However, resting Clark and firing Boston together may not be the ideal combination for a playoff scenario. Even if Indiana struggles to break into the top four for home-court advantage, having Clark back in time for the postseason could be a significant asset. If her time off helps rather than hinders her game, the Fever could emerge as a surprising dark horse in the playoffs.
