How the Islanders' former Identity Line continues to impact as the fourth unit excels

Islanders Find Inspiration from Past Lines

Although traditional identity lines may be a thing of the past, they still hold a special place in the hearts of the players.

Right now, the Islanders’ fourth line consists of Kyle MacLean, Mark Gatcomb, and Cal Clutterbuck, flanking Casey Cizikas. It’s a unique mix, but it works.

“You always notice how they just seem relentless on the forecheck, doing their thing,” Gatcomb shared with the Post before the Islanders edged out a 4-3 victory against the Canucks. “Playing alongside Marty last season really highlighted what it takes to succeed in this league. So, we’re all on the lookout for any little details or advice that could give us an edge. For sure.”

Matt Martin, who continues to remain connected with the team as an advisor to general manager Mathieu Darche, has left a lasting influence.

Clutterbuck, who has also engaged in various projects at Madison Square Garden, is still very active with the team.

And, of course, Cizikas is still around, readily available to help anyone who seeks it.

Since Gatcombe was brought up in early December, this trio has become a reliable presence on the ice, and it doesn’t seem like that will change anytime soon.

In fact, they’ve proven to be the most consistent line for the Islanders throughout January.

It’s noteworthy that, based on Evolving Hockey’s stats, this trio has logged the most 5-on-5 minutes ever recorded for any forward line on the Islanders, racking up 136 minutes so far this season. Their expected goal percentage stands at a solid 55.26, while allowing less than one goal per 60 minutes, reflecting both the team’s injuries and constant adjustments from coach Patrick Roy.

“I’m really impressed by their gameplay,” Coach Roy commented. “They’ve shown amazing consistency and dedication on a nightly basis. Trust is crucial in this sport, and they’ve certainly gained mine.”

Meanwhile, the Canucks are struggling, currently on an 11-game losing streak, as they navigate what the organization describes as a “hybrid realignment.” Recently, they traded winger Kiefer Sherwood to the Sharks in exchange for two future second-round picks and prospect Cole Clayton.

“I’m truly thankful for everything this city and organization has provided me,” Sherwood stated. He noted that he even scored a hat trick against the Islanders in his first match. “This place has always held something special for me.”

As the Islanders continue to build momentum, Ilya Sorokin stood out in the net for the team, paired with Kevin Lankinen, while heading towards their next challenge with the Canucks.
