Setting Boundaries in Marriage

Marriage brings together two families, and sometimes that requires navigating tricky relationships with in-laws.

Ron Simmons, host of BlazeTV, addresses viewer concerns about in-laws, particularly when the dynamics grow tense and cause more stress than benefit.

One viewer inquired about how to handle in-laws who might not share the same faith, especially when children are involved. Simmons offered his perspective:

“I believe it’s important to respect your in-laws, as long as there’s no abuse or anything outright harmful. But, boundaries are key.”

He went on to highlight that Christian parents have a responsibility to introduce their children to the love of Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide them. Simmons asserted, “I wouldn’t permit anything, within reason, to interfere with that.”

Later, Simmons read another viewer’s question regarding her father-in-law, who requested that her husband keep financial matters, like his estate, from the wives. The viewer expressed discomfort over this secretive encouragement.

Simmons quickly noted, “That’s inappropriate. It creates an unnecessary strain between him and his daughter-in-law, which isn’t healthy for the marriage.” He mentioned that many first-time wealth holders fear their children’s spouses may mismanage the money, which likely fuels such requests. Yet, he remarked:

“Your husband can and should discuss this with you. The Bible teaches that when we marry, a man leaves his parents and is united with his wife, becoming one. There’s transparency in that bond. It’s like my right hand knows what my left hand is doing.”

“So, is it right for him to make that request? I personally think it’s not,” he concluded, hinting at the importance of open communication in marriage.
