How to support someone who has turned away from their faith for an LGBTQ+ identity

As the LGBTQ+ movement continues to challenge traditional Christian teachings regarding gender and sexuality, many believers grapple with a difficult question: how to express love for others while also adhering to God’s directives about these topics.

In this context, former lesbian and now Christian apologist Rosaria Butterfield offers valuable insights, as noted by Allie Beth Stuckey during a recent episode of “Relatable.” Butterfield is skilled at navigating these complex emotional situations.

This episode features listener voicemails, with callers seeking guidance on relatable issues faced by many Christians today.

One listener shared a situation familiar to numerous Christian families: a family member has distanced themselves from the faith after identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Specifically, she mentioned her nephew, raised in a Christian environment, who has distanced himself from his family after coming out as gay and marrying his partner.

She asked, “How do you love him while also trying to encourage him to find his way back to the Lord?”

Butterfield responded, emphasizing that the first step is always to show unconditional love for the person in question.

“The first thing you should do, always, is affirm your love for your prodigal in every possible manner,” she advised.

Next, she highlighted the importance of consistent prayer for the individual.

“One of your prayers, especially if your nephew is far away, should be that God brings positive Christian influences into his life,” Butterfield suggested.

Moreover, she stressed that “there is no such thing as a gay marriage,” encouraging prayers for God to clear out any negative influences surrounding the nephew.

Butterfield advised believers to also seek divine insight regarding the individual’s life.

“You might pray for wisdom to understand more about how your nephew’s life is unfolding and whether he’d be open to exploring some deeper discussions with you,” she added.

“Consider whether he seeks belonging or validation, or if there are other underlying issues making it difficult for him to escape harmful behaviors,” she continued. “This understanding can inform how best to engage with him.”

Above all, she urged not to lose hope during these painful circumstances.

“It’s essential to remember that no one who is considered to have ‘left the faith’ is truly beyond its reach,” she remarked.

“Calling someone a ‘faith deconstructor’ is misleading. Faith can’t truly be deconstructed; what we are witnessing is someone who is simply wandering and, hopefully, can find their way back.”
