The dark comedy follows Anora (Madison), a dancer and sex worker. He enters a whirlwind romance with Vanya (Mark Edelstein), the son of a powerful Russian oligarch. When his parents catch the wind of Vegas' fiance in their moment, they send their handlers and negate the marriage.

The film was a top contender throughout all awards seasons, winning Parmedollar at Cannes before winning BAFTA, Critics' Choice Award and three independent Spirit Awards.

“I want to thank the academy for recognizing a truly independent film,” Baker said in his acceptance speech for Best Picture. “This film was made with the blood, sweat and tears of an incredible indie artist… a long live independent film!”
