What is on NBC’s Gold Zone?
If you’re an NFL fan, you’re probably familiar with this show. Named after the NFL Red Zone, “The Gold Zone” is a hugely popular show unlike any other Sunday tradition. Debuting at the start of the 2009 NFL season, the show is hosted by anchor Scott Hanson and provides live coverage of every NFL game.
The magic formula for this type of coverage (and of course, where the name comes from) is rotating screen time based on which team is in the “red zone” (the area of the field between the 20-yard line and the goal line that is most likely to result in a score) and all the big plays happening across the league. Essentially, all of football’s most exciting moments are packaged into one comprehensive program, and you’re never stuck in one place, as we jump between the most exciting moments of every game for the ultimate non-stop adrenaline rush.
That’s exactly what the NBC Sports team was trying to achieve with their first-ever Olympic coverage special. There will be 32 sports, 329 events, a total of 754 sessions (competitions and ceremonies) and 10,500 athletes. That’s all there is to it over 19 days? It’s enough to overwhelm even the most knowledgeable and passionate Olympic fans.

The Summer Olympics only happen once every four years, which means consumers have to be pretty strategic if they want to watch all the action. NBC simply name The tournament, a tradition for the NFL, also stole a host: Scott Hanson, longtime host of NFL Red Zone, will headline a three-host panel every day during the Paris Olympics from July 27 to August 10, along with Andrew Siciliano (himself a former Red Zone host), Matt Eiseman and Akbar Gbaibiamila.
That doesn’t mean traditional Olympic coverage will go away, though — I’m just saying that these Olympics will be the best (and least stressful) viewing experience ever, and it’s not even that close.
