During his first term, President Trump seemed to be responding to the Democrats’ every move. Now, however, it feels like the Democrats are the ones on the offensive against him. Take immigration, for instance—this has become a focal point for the Democrats to attack anytime they see an opportunity.
Back then, Trump couldn’t resist engaging with the Democrats and the media, often firing off tweets in response to their criticisms. His unpredictable shifts in policy led to setbacks, notably with ObamaCare, which impacted both legislation and his approval ratings throughout his initial term.
Perhaps more than any other issue, Trump’s tough stance on illegal immigration ruffled the feathers of Democrats.
A Shift in Dynamic
Even before taking office, Democratic leaders were vocal about their resistance, often spotlighting politically contentious issues. For example, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced plans to increase support for transgender health care, while California’s Governor Gavin Newsom backed incentives for electric vehicles.
Throughout his presidency, whenever Trump proposed something, the Democrats felt compelled to oppose it. This became especially evident during his attempts to enforce immigration policies, which the Democrats often countered, sometimes with deeply entrenched rhetoric.
Democratic Stance on Immigration
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has been notably bold, publicly admitting to having undocumented immigrants in the state, while others in the party rushed to support various anti-ICE actions. Even when a judge in Milwaukee was arrested for allegedly aiding illegal immigrants, Democrats rallied around her, emphasizing their commitment to opposing the enforcement of federal immigration laws.
As protests erupted in Los Angeles, with Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Newsom receiving backlash for their responses, Trump called for federal intervention, like deploying the National Guard. Newsom, on the other hand, tried to position himself as a champion of immigrant rights amidst the chaos.
Increasing Pressure on Democrats
This situation has added pressure to Democratic leaders who are now branded as defenders of undocumented immigrants. Each negative image from protests and local unrest only strengthens Trump’s narrative, while portraying Democrats as soft on law and order.
Approval ratings for both Trump and Biden reflect a tough political landscape. Currently, Biden registers notably low ratings concerning crime and immigration, raising the question: Why are Democrats engaging in such a contentious battle over immigration?
Trump, in contrast, enjoys a favorable perception on immigration issues, suggesting that many Americans may not align with the Democrats’ current approach. His administration has seen a decrease in illegal immigration rates, while crime statistics have also stabilized.
Public Sentiment on Immigration Reform
The situation in California serves as a striking example—voters previously endorsed measures to lessen penalties for certain crimes, showing a shift in attitudes. Even some Democrats are sensing the headwinds in trying to defend immigration policies that aren’t resonating with their constituents.
Immigration remains a lever for Trump, eliciting immediate reactions from the Democrats. For every issue he raises, it seems the Democrats instinctively fall into line, almost as if caught in a perpetual reactionary cycle. They may think they have the upper hand, but in many ways, it appears they are still responding to Trump’s agenda.
