Rama Duwaj: A Quiet Force Behind Zoran Mamdani’s Campaign
Rama Duwaj, the wife of artist Zoran Mamdani, mostly kept to the shadows during the campaign. However, she played a significant role in enhancing the Democratic Socialists’ social media presence, even designing their logo.
A Syrian-American raised in Dallas and educated in Dubai, Duwaj moved to New York City just four years ago. Remarkably, she may soon become the youngest first lady in the city’s history.
At 28, she has largely chosen to avoid the public eye, despite Mamdani’s rising profile. Reports suggest that she’s been a key player behind the scenes, according to CNN.
When Mamdani first launched his campaign, Duwaj helped finalize the brand’s identity. This included selecting the bold imagery and fonts featured in their campaign materials, which prominently feature yellow, orange, and blue.
Sources indicated that she’s been crucial in building her husband’s online and large-scale social media presence while supporting him privately.
Still, Duwaj tends to shy away from cameras, opting out of debates and major events leading up to Election Day. She has been relatively quiet about his high-profile campaign on social media.
In June, she did share an Instagram post after her husband won the Democratic nomination by a landslide. It read, “I couldn’t be more proud.”
Her Instagram primarily showcases her artwork, including pieces that express support for Palestine.
While Duwaj has not given interviews or explained her choice to remain out of the spotlight, it seems the couple had discussed the potential challenges of increased public attention before the campaign escalated.
Mamdani has hinted at his desire for privacy, suggesting that critics are trying to target his wife. A few months back, he mentioned, “Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama. Now these right-wing trolls are trying to make this race about her when it’s supposed to be about you.” This was part of an Instagram post in May.
He also emphasized, “Rama is more than just my wife. She is a great artist who deserves to be known on her own terms. You can criticize my views, but not my family.”
Even with her decision to remain out of the public gaze, some friends of Duwaj have commented on her rising profile amid speculation about her future role if her husband succeeds.
One friend described her as a “modern-day Princess Diana,” according to a New York Times article last month.
While Duwaj seems excited about the journey, some suggest she feels overwhelmed by the growing attention.
With over 160,000 followers on Instagram, Duwaj met Mamdani on the dating app Hinge in 2021. The couple currently resides in a rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria, Queens, and married in a private ceremony in February. They later celebrated with a lavish wedding in Uganda in July.
