Howard Lutnick believes Trump will restore manufacturing in the U.S.

President Donald Trump is utilizing the strength of the US economy to facilitate access for US exporters in China, as ongoing negotiations continue between Washington and Beijing, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

When asked about the implications of Trump’s tariffs, Lutnick mentioned industries including dockworkers and trucking.

Lutnick pointed out the 145% tariffs that Trump implemented on Chinese imports, in contrast to the 125% duties China imposed on US goods in retaliation.

“These tariffs are burdensome for businesses, which is why they’re currently being discussed,” he remarked regarding Chinese tariffs. “The global standard is about 10%. So, it’s important not to overextend. The rest of the world sends goods here. The president emphasizes this frequently. We are global consumers. Everyone is interested in selling here, so collaboration with America is essential.”

The Secretary of Commerce believes increased transactions will follow the US-UK trade agreement: “We will bolster our economy.”

Lutnick further noted that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was in Geneva over the weekend to engage with Chinese officials about tariffs and trade.

Over the weekend, Trump shared on social media that there has been “significant progress” in discussions between the US and China.

Trump announces a new trade deal with the UK, stating it’s “an incredible day for America.”

Lutnick also indicated that Trump is committed to reviving manufacturing in the US, stating that producing goods domestically will exempt companies from tariffs.

“If you decide to manufacture overseas, that’s fine, but tariffs apply. This encourages production domestically due to reduced competition,” he added.

The trade agreements the Trump administration is negotiating with significant economies like the UK will enable more US manufacturers to export, according to the Commerce Secretary.
