Howard Stern Provides Health Update on Billy Joel
Howard Stern shared some encouraging news regarding Billy Joel’s health after the singer faced a troubling brain damage diagnosis.
During a recent episode of the “Howard Stern Show,” Stern, who is 71, addressed Joel’s condition, saying that he “doesn’t die” despite being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus.
“I saw Billy Joel a couple of weeks ago,” he mentioned to co-host Robin Quivers. “We had dinner together.”
Stern elaborated, noting that Joel acknowledged he has a health issue but reassured him, saying, “‘Yeah, you can tell people, you know, I won’t die.'” It seems Joel wants folks to understand that he’s still hopeful.
The two enjoyed a “great conversation” during their time together, even celebrating Joel’s 76th birthday on May 9th, which included pulling out a guitar. “I said I enjoyed playing classical music on the guitar,” Stern said, adding humorously that after singing ‘Happy Birthday,’ Joel didn’t seem very impressed.
This update follows the news that the “Piano Man” artist had to cancel all his tour dates due to his diagnosis last month. Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a rare condition affecting roughly 0.2% of those aged 70 to 80, occurring when cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the skull and disrupts cognitive functions.
Joel had also expressed his regrets about canceling his concerts: “We are so sorry for letting our audience down… thanks for understanding.” He noted that recent performances had worsened his condition, causing issues with hearing, vision, and balance.
Joel’s wife, Alexis Roderick Joel, later shared her feelings about her husband’s diagnosis, thanking fans for their support. “We are very grateful for the amazing care we received and the quick diagnosis,” she wrote on his Instagram account. She emphasized how loved Billy is, describing him as the heart of their family.
Despite these health challenges, sources close to Joel suggest he’s not ready to step away from music. An insider commented, “He’s happiest while he’s performing,” suggesting that music is integral to his life. Another source confirmed that Joel hopes to return to the stage once he recovers.
Interestingly, Joel was diagnosed shortly before the premiere of his new documentary, which has generated thoughtful insights into his legacy and impact on New York’s culture. Co-founders of the film festival expressed their support, wishing him strength during this time.
