Howard Stern’s Future with SiriusXM Uncertain
Reports suggest that the legendary radio personality Howard Stern is facing an unpredictable path with SiriusXM. His contract is due to expire later this year, which leaves his position in flux.
Known for his provocative style, Stern’s influence has reportedly diminished as he has adopted what many refer to as “awakening” ideologies. According to an insider, while SiriusXM plans to extend an offer to Stern, they don’t expect him to accept it. The source claimed, “Sirius and Stern will never reach the financial agreement he desires. It’s becoming less worthwhile to invest.”
During the Trump administration, “The Howard Stern Show” shifted from being a pioneer of shock jock entertainment. In 2023, Stern described his label of “awakening” as a “tribute” while openly criticizing Trump supporters. He stated, “I don’t agree with Trump politically and don’t think he should be anywhere near the White House. I don’t hate him, but honestly, people who vote for him—well, I think they’re foolish.”
The ongoing political climate could significantly affect any deal Stern hopes to strike. Reports note that Stern is deeply involved in negotiations with SiriusXM regarding a potential contract renewal. “If he can reach a satisfactory financial arrangement, it might lead to a brief extension of one or two years,” an insider shared, emphasizing that he’s reluctant to abruptly end employment for his staff.
SiriusXM has not commented on the situation, and the management team behind “The Howard Stern Show” hasn’t provided a response either. Last year, SiriusXM’s president Scott Greenstein praised Stern, calling him an exceptional talent.
Looking back, Stern, fondly dubbed “The King of All Media,” rose to prominence in 1985, gaining millions of listeners on traditional radio before joining Sirius in 2006. Once a supporter of Trump, his critique of the former president has intensified over the years. Stern has also been vocal in favor of COVID-19 vaccine mandates, criticizing those who hesitated to comply during the pandemic.
Despite criticisms over his political stances, media fellow Tim Young from the Heritage Foundation regards Stern as a significant figure in the industry. He remarked, “Howard Stern will always be a radio legend, akin to Rush Limbaugh, in terms of impact.” Young acknowledged the distinct differences in their styles but highlighted how both transformed the radio landscape.
Young added that Stern’s evolution from shock jock to serious interviewer showcases his genuine interest in his guests, emphasizing his diverse hosting skills. “Stern may not appeal to everyone’s taste, but his contribution to radio and culture is undeniable.”
