Howie Rose Announces Retirement from Mets Broadcasting
OTTAWA, Ontario — Howie Rose bid farewell to the Islanders a decade ago, but on Thursday, many shared heartfelt reflections on his impactful career, especially his time calling games at Madison Square Garden.
The 72-year-old broadcaster revealed on Thursday morning that he will retire from Mets radio broadcasts after the 2026 season. Rose has been a fixture in Mets broadcasts since 1987, making his TV and radio debut in 2004.
He served as the television voice for both the Mets and Islanders from 1995 to 2016 and was previously the lead announcer for the Rangers before joining the Islanders.
Anders Lee, an active player who has experienced Rose’s work firsthand, shared, “When I came on board, he was the one picking up the phone. He called many of the games in my early career, and I have some good memories of him. His tenure with the Mets was phenomenal, and he really enjoyed his time with us.”
Reflecting on Rose’s retirement, Lee added, “I wish him all the best in whatever comes next. I’m sure he’ll take time to relax and enjoy summer with his family. He’s been a crucial part of our organization and his calls were exceptional for many years.”
Lee is one of just two active players who played a full season with the Islanders during Rose’s final year, along with Casey Cizikas in the 2015-16 season. Some other players like Ryan Pulock and Adam Pelech made appearances, but none played as many as 15 games that year.
Brendan Burke has since taken over the play-by-play duties and has become a beloved figure among Islanders fans.
Despite his departure, Rose leaves behind a legacy filled with treasured memories. Casey Cizikas commented, “The passion he had for the organization and its fans was something special. His career has been incredible, and we wish him the very best in retirement.”
On another note, Matthew Schaefer missed the morning practice due to bad weather but managed to play against the Senators, scoring a goal in a 3-2 defeat.
Ilya Sorokin started as the goaltender for the Islanders, achieving 23 saves in the game.
Cole Yzerman signed his entry-level contract on Wednesday and participated in practice with the Bridgeport Islanders, with expectations to play this weekend.
Max Shabanov continued to skate with the Islanders while dealing with a lower body issue.
