HUD posts shutdown alert regarding 'radical left' on its website

On Tuesday, the Housing and Urban Development Bureau released a statement on its homepage, criticizing the “radical left” for potentially causing a government shutdown.

According to the statement, “The radical left is attempting to impose significant hardship on Americans if they don’t agree to shut down the government and meet a $1.5 trillion list of demands.”

The statement emphasized that the Trump administration aims to keep the government functioning for the benefit of the American people.

Currently, Congressional Republicans and Democratic leaders are at odds over government funding, putting a shutdown on the horizon. On September 19, House Republicans passed a bill designed to maintain existing spending levels until November 21. However, it did not garner the needed 60 votes in the Senate that same day, while an alternative measure put forth by Democrats was also rejected. The Democrats have resisted agreeing to the House’s proposal to extend the Obamacare grant, which expires this year, and to reverse Medicaid cuts linked to a larger bill.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated at a press conference on Monday, “If the government shuts down, it’s because Republicans chose to do so rather than help people afford medical care.”

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner elaborated on HUD’s stance in a post on X. He remarked, “The radical, far-left Democrats holding our government hostage risk denying flood insurance as two storms are approaching our southeastern region.” He expressed concern that “homes could be lost and lives significantly impacted,” highlighting the stakes of the ongoing negotiations.

Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakem Jeffries met with President Trump at the White House on Monday in an effort to avert a shutdown. However, the meeting did not yield any resolutions.

During a social media exchange, Trump referred to the Democrats’ demands with a touch of humor, suggesting their declining popularity among various communities, including Black and Latino voters. He mentioned, “We need new voters, and perhaps providing free healthcare to undocumented individuals may win them over.”

Schumer later accused the president of finding amusement in the government chaos, saying, “If you treat shutdowns as a joke, it reveals you’re not interested in negotiations, only in throwing tantrums,” a sentiment he expressed through another online post.
