Human remains found in suitcase outside Long Island apartment building

The discovery of a decomposed body in a suitcase next to an apartment building on Long Island on Tuesday left residents of the leafy area in disbelief.

Suffolk County Police said the horrifying discovery was made by officers who responded to a report of “suspicious activity” in a wooded area on Nassau Road in Huntington Station around midday.

Passersby reportedly complained of a foul odor and noticed a suspicious suitcase.

“I can't believe it,” said local resident Flavio Rivadeneira. News 12 Long Island“I would never have imagined something like that happening in or around my building!”

The suitcase was found deep in the woods near the apartment building, and it's unclear how long it had been there or when the person inside died.

Police, including a crime lab and a police dog unit, swarmed the scene, sealing it off with yellow police tape, and it was only after nightfall that the coroner arrived to remove the body.

Acting Police Chief Robert Waring said the person's identity and cause of death will not be known until an autopsy is completed by the Suffolk County Coroner's Office.
