A human skull was discovered Thursday night in a dense swamp on the eastern tip of Nantucket Island, but foul play has not been ruled out.
An “intact skull and many bones” were discovered near Tom Nevers’ river by two men searching for deer antlers. Nantucket Current reported.
“I kept asking myself what I was looking at,” said Peter McHugh, a Connecticut resident who has a home on Massachusetts Island.
He was looking for deer antlers, or “huts.” Deer antlers shed bucks before they grow large. People may collect it, sell it, or use it to make furniture or art.
“It was surreal,” McHugh said. At first he thought it was a dead animal. He added that the remains were somehow overlooked by hunters, even though there were several upland deer lookouts in the area.
Nantucket Police and Massachusetts State Police are investigating, but the identity and cause of death are not yet known. According to officials.
Lt. Angus McVicar of the Nantucket Police Department told Current, “This is an open case and anything, including foul play, cannot be ruled out.”
“We’re looking into everything,” he said. “We are very confident that we can identify the human remains that have been recovered.”
But Mr McVicar said: “We have no idea when that will be.”
