A human skull attached to a padlocked dumbbell was discovered by a magnet fisherman in a waterway in New Orleans, Louisiana, leaving investigators with many questions.
On May 18, a man made a shocking discovery off the coast of the Bayou St. John Bridge using a hockey puck-sized magnet and a rope to pull up a 15-pound dumbbell “padlocked to a human skull,” which was “completely decomposed and missing the jaw and upper row of teeth,” police said. The magnet fishermen also pulled a handgun and gun barrel from the water that day. It is unclear whether these are related to the skull.
The fisherman, whose name has not been released, stopped police officers, who recovered the items for investigation.
The coroner did not say whether the skull had been identified, but a spokesman told local media it could be months before the victim’s name was known.
Since the skull was discovered, police have deployed dive teams and cadaver dogs to search the waters and coastline in the area, and are appealing for information from the public.
