Human Smugglers Concealed 12 Migrants in Hay Bales on a Trailer

Texas Deputy Intercepts Human Smuggling Operation

A Texas sheriff’s deputy intercepted a pickup truck towing a trailer filled with large hay bales, uncovering a hidden human smuggling operation. Inside the hollowed-out bales, approximately 12 undocumented immigrants were discovered.

Sheriff Keith Korenek of Fayette County announced that Drug Stoppers Sergeant Randy Thumann initiated the traffic stop on a white Ford F-250 shortly after noon on Tuesday. This took place on Interstate 10, around the 658-mile marker, positioned almost 250 miles from the Texas-Mexico border.

According to Sheriff Korenek, Sergeant Thumann noticed that the hay bales had been specially altered to conceal the individuals inside. Smugglers cleverly employed metal frameworks and layers of hay to evade law enforcement.

“This method of hiding people is not only deceitful but also extremely hazardous,” the sheriff remarked. “Smugglers are continually finding new and dangerous ways to move people through Texas.”

The suspected smuggler has been identified as 44-year-old Delbert Flanders from Kansas, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Two other suspects, 22-year-old Adanaylo Lambert and 25-year-old Lency Delgado Fernandez, both from Houston, were arrested and face state and federal charges tied to human smuggling.

The twelve migrants have been handed over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for processing and removal.

This incident marks the first significant seizure by Sergeant Thumann since July 2016. He, alongside his K-9 partners, has been involved in numerous seizures of drugs and cash, as well as other incidents related to human trafficking.

The investigation is ongoing, with both state and federal authorities involved, as noted by Sheriff Korenek.
