Padres Prospect Pleads Guilty to Immigration Charges
A prominent prospect for the Padres, Humberto Cruz, has admitted guilt in a case involving the transportation of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. Following this, he has opted for voluntary deportation back to Mexico.
Cruz, ranked as the fifth-best prospect by MLB Pipeline, faced a misdemeanor charge for accepting payments for transportation. Reports indicate that he acknowledged it was “virtually certain” he would be deported. According to various sources, including the San Diego Union-Tribune, the 19-year-old made the choice to leave the country and return to Mexico.
The Padres understand that as a consequence, Cruz will likely lose his 10-year work visa but may reapply after a period of five years, assuming he exhibits good behavior during that time. Originally, prosecutors aimed for felony charges against him, recalling that the Padres signed Cruz with a $750,000 bonus in 2024.
Cruz was arrested in October near an Arizona border town on suspicions of transporting illegal immigrants in a 2020 BMW SUV. He waived his Miranda rights and admitted to agents that he was aware the individuals being transported were undocumented. Reportedly, he expected to receive $1,000 for each person he transported.
At the time of his arrest, Cruz was undergoing recovery from Tommy John surgery. In a statement, he expressed his profound regret over his actions and acknowledged the disappointment he caused to teammates, fans, and family alike.
In terms of his statement, he said, “I recognize that my actions fell below the standards expected of me as a professional… I take responsibility for my actions and understand the impact they have caused.” He apologized for being a distraction to his teammates and expressed remorse for not living up to the trust placed in him by fans.
Cruz has committed to reflecting on this incident, emphasizing a dedication to personal growth and accountability. He aims to demonstrate through his actions that he can regain trust in the future.
In addition to his guilty plea, Cruz received a 30-day prison sentence but was credited for time already served. He played in rookie ball for the Padres during 2024 and 2025 before moving up to Single-A.
