Army Colonel Chris Ellis Researching extreme disaster preparedness. In 2021 DissertationIn his book, Are You Prepared? A Look at Safety in Modern Disaster Preparedness from Normal to Noah’s Day, Ellis points out that at least 11.4 million people “have the means to survive in their homes for 31 days or more after a disaster.”
Earlier this year, Ellis
Said According to Reuters, the number of “preppers,” or “survivalists who take a variety of proactive steps to prepare for future disasters, far beyond the official three-to-14-day recommendations,” has grown to roughly 20 million people. Ellis based his conclusion on household resilience data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Attendees at the Longmont Survival & Prepper Show in Boulder in March gave Reuters some insight into why the number of preppers has skyrocketed in recent years, citing supply chain disruptions, lawlessness, power grid problems and poor phone signal during the pandemic.
While millions of people are preparing for the worst, some can’t be bothered to wait.
On 1,245 acres in Juab County, Utah, 55 miles west of Santaquin and about 40 miles north of Delta, a group of settlers are creating a community focused on one of the main goals of preppers: self-reliance.
“With everything that’s going on right now, it makes me wonder if that’s enough.”
Philip GleasonFounder of Utah [Operation Self-Reliance] Land Cooperatives At River Bed Ranch, Said According to the Deseret News, some of the 130 families, mostly Mormons, who secured two-acre plots of land, came to escape the ongoing “cultural revolution in America.”
“At the start of any cultural revolution, the people who control what they eat are the ones who win,” Gleason said.
A California mother sought refuge at her school to escape what she perceived as LGBT propaganda, while a Portland couple told the Deseret News they simply “needed to get out.”[t]Man, they’ve gone nuts.”
Some people made the journey for health reasons.
Gleason said most people “just want a safe place to raise their families and get food.”
“When I first got here I thought maybe it was too far away,” Gleason said, “and now with everything going on I wonder if it’s really far enough.”
Similar goals, fears, and
literatureGleason suggested that people who have joined his off-grid community since settling in 2021 still balk at the label “preppers.”

build Build a house, a barn, a greenhouse, install a septic tank, produce solar energy, and dig a well. There is no sanitation or community power system. Luckily, there is a freshwater aquifer beneath the valley’s floodwaters, so digging a well is not a wasted effort.
According to the Riverside Ranch website:
residents The residents, who are apparently “very happy” with their Starlink internet connection, still have to pass Juab County building inspections, which follow international residential standards. In addition to meeting the building standards, residents also have to pay county taxes.
Apparently there are plans to build similar communities in Arizona, Wyoming, Idaho and the Canadian province of Alberta. Gleason’s company, OSR Green LLC, has purchased 1,298 acres near Snowflake, Arizona, where it plans to build.
Kosler CoveIt is said to be the largest off-grid community in the state.
Meanwhile, other rural shelters, e.g.
Vivos Global Shelter Network Bunker System While it comes across as very individualistic and private, Riverbed Ranch appears to offer a much more integrated and communitarian approach.
The Deseret News reports that more than 70 children in the community are being home-schooled, with some parents involved in tutoring. Health issues are dealt with by volunteers, though Gleason admits he had to be flown back to civilization by ambulance helicopter last year when he broke his femur. Cash is bought and sold for a variety of purchases, but livestock, bread and dairy products are also reportedly being bought and sold.
“Once this is all finished, we may be the third or fourth largest community in the county,” Gleason told Deseret.
